Day 03: Leh to Shey; Shey to Thiksey; Thiksey to Hemis

On Day 03, you will get the opportunity to visit some of the finest monasteries of the place. The first destination will be Shey which is approximately 15km far from Leh. Not a lot of people know that Shey used to be refuge for the kings from Ladakh during the summer seasons. Gompas and Stupas are a great attraction of this place. There is a palace in Shey which was constructed nearly 400 years ago. When in Shey do not forget to visit the Buddha statue called Shakyamuni which is located within the walls of Dresthang Gompa.

From Shey will be go to Thiksey Gompa, which is barely a few kilometers from there (approx 17km from Leh). This monastery was constructed during the reign of Gelukspa order and is an eye catching structure.

From Thiksey we will go to Hemis. This monastery is nearly 45 km from Leh to its south and is one of the most popular one. This monastery was also built some 400 years ago by the Drukpa order (so it belongs to them). Hemis is a perfect place with beautiful landscapes and breathtaking sights. You will stay in the hotel in the night.

Day 04: Drive from Leh to Spitok; Trek to Zingchan

We will leave for Spitok from Leh a little early in the morning and will reach in about one hour. You will be then guided to Spituk Gompa, a beautiful monastery, which was built many centuries ago. Once you are Spituk, there is no driving route to Zingchan. Therefore, we will start with our trek. A bridge will await you and once you are across it you will head to south-west of the Indus River. A ravine pass will take you to the place where Zingchan and Indus rivers conjoin. We will trek all the way to the Zingchan village where we will camp and spend the night.

Day 05: Zingchan to Yurutse (via Rumbak)

In the morning, after the breakfast, we will start ascending to Rumbak. It is a moderate climb and relatively easier than what you will experience later. During the climb, you will be witness to some of the most stunning views of the mountains clad in milky snow. You will walky by the Rumbak Nala while Yurutse will keep getting closer. Yurutse is at about 4000 meters about the sea level. You will also see lots of farms of potatoes and barley. The night will be spent in the tents.

Day 06: Yurutse to Skiu (via Ganda La)

On this day you will start your journey with a moderate climb. However, it will soon be followed by a steep ascent. We will first reach Ganda La. From here you can witness the Himalayan range to the north and Zanskar range to your south. The day will not all be about climb. We will also be descending to the village of Shingo. It will be a long descent. It will be an eventful day as you will have different types of experiences. For instance, you will walk right into a narrow gorge which will take you to Skiu which is nearly 3100 meters from the seal level. Skiu is the place where you will be able to see the beautiful confluence of two rivers. The eventful day will end with a night stay in the tents.

Also, there are a number of streams and rivers but no bridges. Therefore, you will need to get across the rivers many times on foot. While on our way to thochuntse, we will also pass the Hankar village of Markha valley. In Thochuntse, we will spend the night in the tents.

Day 09: Thochuntse to Nimaling

Get ready for another pleasant trek to Nimaling. On the way you will encounter various inclines. Also, you will also see grass covered ridges. The place is also dotted with the chortens and flanked by Mani walls. These walls have been engraved with texts for Buddhist prayers. Nimaling is about 4700m above sea level and one of the most beautiful places you could ever get to see. The Kangyaze peak is one of the biggest attractions of this place. You will spend the night in the tent.

Day 10: Nimaling to Kongmaru La

Day 10 will be about getting across to Markha’s north. You will also get atop Kongmaru La (5150m), which is the highest pass of the three passes of this area. Once you have savoured every moment of it, the descend will start to the Martselang valley. Walk along the stream of Marselang and you will be led to Sumdo village. The night will again be spent in the tents.
