It is also the home to the second largest sanctuary of Kerala known as Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It was established in the year 1973. Wayanad is a quintessential Western Ghat area with temperature staying in the range of 16 to 21 degree centigrade. Calicut is the nearest railway station as well as airport. Agriculture contributes to the overwhelming portion of the economy of this region. Vanilla, pepper, cocoa, tea, and coffee plants can be abundantly seen here.
