Known for its clean, clear, and golden hued sandy beaches, Poovar is a rather lesser known tourist spots near Kovalam. Poovar is a pretty small village and is very close to Kerala’s capital city Thiruvananthapuram (nearly 25 km). From Kovalam it is nearly 17km. Footfall of the tourists is less and this is the primary reason why the beaches and backwaters are extremely clean and serene. This makes it even more worthy of a visit when you are holidaying in Kerala.

This village is also known as the fishing community’s home as it is right at Neyyar River’s mouth. If you are keen on learning the local culture of Kerala while having some leisurely time in the calm and tranquil surroundings, Poovar is the place where you should be.

Poovar Beach is one of the major attractions of this place. This beach separates Neyyar River from the sea. If you are looking for solitude and some quite, it is the best place to be. The tourists are not in plenty and there is never any hustle-bustle. There are many recreational activities available including water sports and other beach activities. You can also take the cruise from Poovar to the neighbouring villages. Beside the island is an estuary which is also a very beautiful place to visit.
